Minnesota doesn’t have just one season worth visiting for — it has four, each with its own completely different character. Whether you’re drawn to the lakes, the slopes, or the quiet magic of the north woods, there’s a right time to visit and it depends entirely on what kind of escape you’re after.
Here’s a season-by-season breakdown of what to expect across our Minnesota properties near Maple Lake, Giants Ridge, and the surrounding north country.
Summer (June–August) — The Classic Lake Season
This is peak Minnesota lake life. Long golden days, warm water, boat traffic on the lake, and the smell of sunscreen and campfire. At the Maple Lake Hideaway, summers mean kayaking off the private beach, fishing from the dock, evenings around the firepit, and pontoon rides at sunset. Book early — summer weekends fill fast, especially around the Fourth of July.
Fall (September–October) — The Underrated Season
Locals will tell you fall is the best-kept secret in Minnesota travel. The crowds thin out, the leaves turn brilliant shades of red and orange across the birch and aspen forests, and the lakes take on a dramatic, mirror-like quality in the cooler air. Fishing is excellent in September, the trails are quiet, and you’ll often find better availability and rates. Highly recommended for couples or anyone who prefers peace over peak-season buzz.
Winter (December–March) — Ski, Snowmobile & Ice Fish
At Giants Ridge in Biwabik, winter is the whole point. Downhill skiing, snowboarding, Nordic trails, snowmobiling, and ice fishing on nearby lakes — the Iron Range comes alive when the snow arrives. The Lodge at Giants Ridge keeps you comfortable between runs with an indoor pool, hot tub, and Neighbor’s BBQ Company right on site. This is a destination, not just a stopover.
Spring (April–May) — Quiet, Green & Refreshing
Spring is the value season. Snowmelt feeds the lakes and rivers, wildflowers push through the forest floor, and migratory birds return in remarkable numbers. It’s ideal for hiking, birding, photography, and anyone who wants the north woods to themselves. Fewer guests, lower rates, and the landscape waking up around you — there’s something genuinely peaceful about a Minnesota spring.
